Slovenian Museum and Archives, Cleveland’s Newest Cultural Gem

May 2, 2008

The Board of Directors of the Slovenian Museum and Archives is excited to announce the most recent developments in the establishment of Cleveland’s newest cultural gem.

SMA is pleased to announce that it has a functioning headquarters located at:

Slovenian Museum and Archives (SMA)
6409 St. Clair Avenue
Cleveland, OH 44103
Phone: (216) 361-5600
Fax: (216) 361-5601
Toll Free: 1-800-361-4SMA

Work is being done on creating an office and depot which will offer a secure and (temperature and humidity) controlled environment in which to accept archival materials very soon.  In March, our telephone and internet systems were installed and thanks to Don Craven, Manager of 55 Public Square, LLC, our office and depot are fully functional and furnished.  The remaining architectural plan will be implemented in phases, concurrent with the development of SMA.

In March, SMA received its first significant donation by way of a generous grant from the Government of Slovenia, Office for Slovenes Abroad.  This has prompted other major individual contributions from members of the SMA Board of Directors.  The Richman Foundation has also answered to our request for financial assistance with a sizeable grant.  We hope that as you learn about the important work that SMA is doing, and the dedication of its volunteer members, you will respond generously to our appeal for donations.

As part of this campaign, we will be holding a special black tie reception and art exhibit in May to present our developments and lay out our plans for the future.  We will be sending invitations for the event; however, we encourage you to call us if you are interested in attending and do not receive an invitation.

SMA needs volunteers.  There is a lot happening at SMA and we need your participation.  Whether it’s helping to organize our collection, or assisting with our development efforts, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available.  If you have the time and inclination to lend a hand, please contact SMA at the above captioned number.  Please indicate your primary areas of interest.

In conjunction with the newly opened Slovenian Studies Center based at Cleveland State University, which will officially launch in May, SMA will render invaluable services to historians, researchers, students and genealogists.

Join in SMA’s mission to preserve and share Slovenian ethnic identity and its various migration experiences in a sophisticated, multi-functional and interactive dwelling.  SMA will provide an educational, cultural and literary resource for families and will include an archives, library, museum, and cinematheque.

If you would like to support the valuable work that the Slovenian Museum and Archives (SMA) is doing, please contact us.   Check your local news source for news about our development and upcoming events.  You can also provide your tax deductible donation to SMA in care of Friends of Slovenian National Home, until SMA has officially obtained its own 501(c)(3) status.
